A batsman has a certain average of runs for 11 innings. in the 12th inning he scores 129 runs, thereby increasing his average by 9 runs, what is the average of for the first 11 innings?

 

Solution:

 

Assume his initial average = X
His total runs after 12 innings = 12X
After scoring 129 runs his average got increased by 5 to X + 5
So his total runs after 17 innings = 13 x (X+5)
But it was given that the difference in the total scores after 12 innings and 13 innings = 129
Therefore 13×(x+5)−12x=129

13x + 65 – 12X = 129

X = 129 – 65

X = 64 (Answer)

 

And
His new average = 64 + 5 = 69
